Your Moving Checklist

Take it one step at a time — only do the week you’re in. You’ve got this, and we’ve got the heavy part.

Your Moving Countdown

6 weeks before

• Book your movers early (summer Saturdays fill up) — call Able at 705-471-5044
• Start using up freezer food and cleaning supplies
• Take phone photos of anything valuable
• If downsizing, start sorting now

4 weeks before

• Gather boxes and supplies — buy 10–15% more boxes than you think
• Pack the rooms you barely use: basement, spare room, off-season clothes
• Book the day off work; arrange care for kids and pets

2 weeks before

• Confirm your moving date and address with Able
• Start your change-of-address list (below)
• Return library books, pick up dry cleaning, refill prescriptions
• Arrange truck parking; book the elevator if in an apartment/condo

1 week before

• Pack everything except daily essentials
• Label boxes on the top and two sides, room name largest
• Set your “Open-First” box aside
• Take apart bed frames and table legs, or leave them for the crew

Moving day

• Keep the Open-First box, documents and valuables with you
• Final walk-through: closets, cupboards, garage, shed
• Point the crew to fragile boxes
• Take meter readings; leave keys as agreed

First week after

• Unpack the Open-First box, then the kitchen and beds
• Finish your change-of-address list
• Check your belongings; tell Able right away if anything needs attention
• Flatten boxes for recycling

Your First-Night Box (load it last, open it first)

• IDs & important documents
• Medications
• Phone & chargers
• Toiletries & a towel each
• A change of clothes for everyone
• Toilet paper & paper towel
• Basic tools & a flashlight
• Kettle, coffee/tea, snacks & water
• Bedding & pillows
• Kids’ comfort items & pet supplies
• Scissors & a box cutter
• Bin bags & cleaning supplies

Ontario Change-of-Address Checklist

• Within 6 days (by law): Driver’s licence & vehicle permit — ServiceOntario
• Within 30 days: Health card (OHIP) — ServiceOntario
• Before moving day: Canada Post mail forwarding (canadapost.ca)
• 2–4 weeks ahead: Utilities — North Bay Hydro, Enbridge Gas, water, internet/phone
• Soon after: Canada Revenue Agency (Child Benefit, GST/HST credit, refunds)
• Soon after: Banks, credit cards, home/auto/life insurance
• Soon after: Family doctor, dentist, children’s school
• Soon after: Employer, subscriptions & deliveries
